There are two kinds of punk rock: the kind that makes it on the radio because it sounds dissentious in comparison to the other stuff played on the radio, and the kind that’s too radical for radio (and the bands that make this kind of punk rock are probably too radical to want to be played on the radio). Propagandhi is of the latter kind, and when they say their principles are not to be tested or compromised, they mean it. After signing to Fat Mike’s Fat Wreck Chords in 1991, they ended that relationship because of, as they put it on their website, the “CEO’s highly publicized campaign to ensure that [the] Democratic Party took a turn to totally rape and plunder the planet in the service of corporate power.” Now signed to Epitaph, Propagandhi has just released Failed States, and although their sound has transformed into something heavier and more progressive than their earlier work, the messages they convey are still as principled, meaningful, and unrepentant as they were in the beginning. The fact that they refuse to compromise on any account makes them true punks. (Mendez)
