Pure Fiction

Novelist duo makes up tunes on the fly.

To hear Buffalo guitarist Chase Middaugh tell it, you'd think he and fellow Novelist bandmate Ryan McMullen were Siamese twins onstage. See for yourself at their Lakewood concert tonight. "It's synthesis. We are on the same wavelength musically," says Middaugh. "The only difficult part of being in a two-piece band is there are less people to chip in when it comes time to pay for things." In their first gig outside of New York, the pair will riff on an instrumental set from their debut CD, Drosera, whose six tracks, when played live, can last as long as 37 minutes apiece. You can give props to their improv style for the length. "Sometimes, there's a playfulness to see who can keep up with whom (what?)," says Middaugh. "We have such a great chemistry to know what the other person is going to do and where we're going to go." Novelist performs at 8 tonight at Bela Dubby, 13321 Madison Avenue in Lakewood. Admission is free. Call 216-221-4479 or visit
