Boston's Push Stars have benefited from an amazing string of good luck since their initial bad break -- signing to the doomed Imago label for their 1996 debut, Meet Me at the Fair. Because of the label's demise, the Stars' excellent album sank relatively quickly, forcing the band to self-release its 1997 follow-up, the "Tonight" EP. Since that unfortunate start, things have played out a little better for the genre-hopping pop-folk-country-rock trio (singer-songwriter/guitarist Chris Trapper, bassist/keyboardist Dan McLoughlin, and drummer Ryan MacMillan, often augmented by multi-instrumentalist Phil Broikas). The buzz generated by Fair and "Tonight" led to the Stars' inclusion on the very high-profile There's Something About Mary soundtrack with the song "Everything Shines." That appearance piqued the interest of Capitol Records, which signed the band and released 1999's After the Party to near universal acclaim. Since then, the Push Stars have become the band to feature on a soundtrack, checking in with "Drunk Is Better Than Dead" on the soundtrack to Gun Shy and their funky Brazilian samba spin on Steely Dan's "Bad Sneakers" for the Jim Carrey yuckfest Me, Myself and Irene. Last year was a relatively quiet year for the Push Stars, offering just the soundtrack contributions and the song "Any Little Town" for the Stop Handgun Violence album, as well as a Boston Music Award for Outstanding Debut Rock Band (Major Label). This year promises to be a bit more eventful, as the band will get more mileage out of "Drunk Is Better Than Dead" when it appears on the soundtrack to Fox's huge hit TV series Malcolm in the Middle and finally releases its long awaited fourth album, Opening Time, in early February.
