Quack House

Despite the timbery-sounding nature of its name, today’s Wood Duck Festival at North Chagrin Reservation’s Nature Center pays tribute to a real live bird. So don’t go looking for intricately carved mallards at the third-annual outing. There will be plenty of breathing ones, however. “The event highlights the incredible fall colors found in Northeast Ohio, as well as the most colorful duck in our area,” says manager Barb Burko. In a few weeks, the ducks will begin their seasonal southward migration. They’ll even sport brand-new plumage for the occasion. “It’s an amazing time to view and photograph them,” says Burko. Today’s bash includes a photo contest, nature presentations, and some dude’s collection of mounted dead ducks. Games and crafts keep the little ones busy. “People like ducks because they’re large, colorful, and rather tolerant of people,” says Burko. “It’s the one type of bird everyone knows.”
