R.A.W.

With Jackal & Hyde, Adam T, Donald Glaude, JE Merg, DJ T-1000, Omar Santana, Tom Sawyer, and Joshua Perry. Saturday, December 16, at the Agora.

As a member of Los Angeles' Modern Musique crew, Raoul Gonzalez got his start as a hip-hop DJ back in the mid-'80s. But once he began spinning techno in '91, he gave himself two brand-new names: R.A.W. (Rough and Wicked) and B-Boy 3000.

Then, as breakbeat techno evolved into jungle, R.A.W. followed suit, backing up his skills on the turntables with solid production work that has yielded numerous singles, CDs, and mixtapes. What's even more impressive than R.A.W.'s tenure in the L.A. dance scene or his massive discography is the way he's managed to fuse elements of jungle, dancehall, and hip-hop, playing up the competitive machismo common to all three genres. Deeply inspired by hip-hop's DJ and MC battles, as well as the rudeboy soundclashes of dancehall and jungle, R.A.W.'s testosterone-fueled mixes explode with thumping beats, snarling bass lines, and verbal braggadocio. Praise Jah, pass the spliff, and prepare for sonic shell shock.
