Richard Buckner/Comfort Clouds/Keith Freund

When: Sat., Aug. 17, 9 p.m. 2013
Price: $5
It’s not easy to get into Richard Buckner’s music. The singer-songwriter writes introspective songs that are so subtle, it would be easy to dismiss them. But dig a little deeper, and you’ll be rewarded. For his forthcoming album, Surround, Buckner only used a Suzuki QChord electronic autoharp and an Electro-Harmonix POG2 pedal. And he recorded the whole thing at his house. The simple approach worked out well as songs such as “Mood” and “Go” have a haunted beauty to them. “Cut” has a bit more texture to it, but it, too, emphasizes simple guitar chords and Buckner’s gravelly voice. Buckner’s career stretches back over a decade but expect to hear a bunch of tracks from Surround at this show, which kicks off his fall tour in support of the album. (Niesel)
