Riders on the Storm

Featuring the dude from Fuel, with the Bangkok Five. Thursday, May 24, at House of Blues.

The Doors Hot Topic
After a lawsuit by John Densmore, the two remaining Doors have stopped using the D word -- but they're still playing the same songs, now under the name Riders on the Storm. The Cult's Ian Astbury fronted the band during its initial revival a few years back, a pairing that sounded better on paper than live. For his replacement, Ray Manzarek and Robby Krieger have hired former Fuel singer Brett Scallions.

So let me get this straight: Manzarek and Krieger won't take a few million to allow the Doors' music to be used in an Apple ad, but they'll charge fans 30 bucks a pop to hear some of the greatest rock songs ever sung by a guy who shops at Hot Topic? (Last time we checked, which admittedly was a while back, he took the stage in pleather pants, with a necklace made of those big, shiny, steel ball bearings.) It's unclear whether they'll perform Fuel's radio staple "Shimmer," but sadly, it would probably be a highlight. A VIP ticket for $170 includes an opera box seat, T-shirt, and a meet-and-greet with the band. That's worth the opportunity just to ask what the hell these guys are thinking.
