Royally Screwed

JCU's exhibit puts to rest those nasty rumors about Queen Elizabeth I.

In John Carroll University's exhibit Elizabeth I: Ruler and Legend, Carole Levin tries to set the record straight about the Virgin Queen's sex life. It wasn't as it was portrayed in the 1998 movie Elizabeth, in which the monarch jumped into bed with Robert Dudley while her ladies-in-waiting watched. "First, she'd never do it in front of anybody," laughs Levin, co-curator of the traveling exhibit. "And whether he was her lover is debatable."

The collection of 100 photo reproductions compiles Elizabeth's manuscripts, letters, and books. One of Levin's favorite pieces is a letter written by the never-married Elizabeth to an uncle. "Everybody said she had to marry, but nobody agreed on whom she should marry," says Levin. "But if you notice her incredibly beautiful signature, it shows her strength as a future ruler."
