Scene Bands to Watch: Ohio Sky/Night Sweats/Sun Spots/Free Medicine/Demos Papadimas

When: Fri., Feb. 8, 7:30 p.m. 2013
Price: $5
Categorized as a hardcore band because of its first two EPs, Cleveland’s Ohio Sky stepped out last year with its first full-length, Curses. Featuring a newer, more articulate sound, the CD wraps metal, rock and pop into all 13 tracks, but it only takes the opening “Van Gogh” to make an impression. From the beginning riff, you’re hit with a deep sea of high-pitched melodic vocals then washed ashore with a sudden ending of banging drums, gasping for air as the rest of the album throws you around just as hard. Though praised for its new sound and technique, the fivesome has altered its sound again for its upcoming EP This House is Old and Filled with Ghosts. Written for acoustic guitars, only some of the songs were transferred to electric when recording, keeping the EP a smoother blend of piano, violin and, in some cases, trombone. They didn’t abandon their rock roots, though, and still add heavy instrumental breakdowns reminiscent of their past releases. The band shares this bill with a group of up-and-coming local acts that made Scene’s “Bands to Watch” issue that came out earlier this year. (Nikki Hunt)
