Scrimshaw

To Kill the Sun (MySpace.com/ScrimshawNow)

Scrimshaw new age
Even when it ventures into ambient country with its dreamy indie rock and electro, Scrimshaw's messages are just and well articulated. On its new EP, the band excels at matching its lyrical vision with the atmospheric sounds.

The title cut's rain-forest imagery decries environmental devastation. The lush strings, female vocals, and soft techno beats evoke both Pure Moods and Metropolis Records compilations. "Empirical," meanwhile, is possibly the only anti-war song of the modern era to boast a flute solo.

While those two tracks contain snippets of phantom electronica culled from Kmart's new-age kiosk, others excel at conjuring nightmares. The synth line in "Known This Before" is scarier than any of the assholes Scrimshaw rallies against -- Dick Cheney, for example.
