Athena was the Greek Goddess of Wisdom, Ares was the Greek God of War, and Septic Flesh is the Greek God of Death Metal. Formed in 1990 by a couple of Greek guys with awesome names like Sotiris Vayenas, Spiros Antoniou and Christos Antoniou. To date, they’ve released seven studio albums and two EPs, and they’ve have gone through numerous members with names equally tough to spell. Their latest album, The Great Mass, infuses symphonic elements with the harsh and heavy death metal in the album, courtesy of the Prague Philharmonic Orchestra. Septic Flesh hasn’t been the first band to do it, but they pull it off pretty well on the album, as bursts of heavy guitar strumming and pounding double-bass drums follow orchestral interludes. But just because every song includes epic choirs and/or sublime, chill-inducing string melodies, taking your parents or relatives who enjoy the orchestra to this show may not be a good idea; Mom and Dad will probably get bloodied in the mosh-pit.
