I'm Not Bossy, I'm the Boss (Nettwerk)
One of the greatest voices in rock/pop, singer Sinead O'Connor hasn't put out a chart-topping record in years. But she's still got a powerful voice. On "The Voice of My Doctor," she defiantly sings, "You tricked me into that you loved me/you tricked me into making love," over a nasty blues guitar riff. It doesn't quite hit home like her cover of Prince's "Nothing Compares to U" did, but it comes close. On "James Brown," a duet with Seun Kuti, she mixes Afrobeat and funk and really sneers, dropping all sorts of "ooohs" and "yeahs." She sounds equally inspired on "Take Me to Church," an anthem in which she really wails as she confesses, "I've done so many bad things, it hurts." O'Connor will probably never again be on top of the charts like she once was, but this is a strong effort from someone who's still got great vocal chops.
