Sista Act

Women artists pick up brushes and cameras for new show.

New work by nine black female artists will be unveiled at tonight’s opening reception for Summit Artspace’s STAR: Sistas Thrive Art Revolution exhibit. The 20-piece show features photos, prints, and sculptures by local artists Caressa Matthews, Christine Morrow, and Robin Sallie. Additionally, Shani Richards contributes rap-inspired jewelry, and Magalie Foster shows off paintings accented with black-eyed peas (no, not Fergie; the vegetable).

The pieces were handpicked by curator Ericka Abram, who moved to Akron from Los Angeles four years ago. She’s been scouting the city since last fall for a spot to open the Scott Gallery of Black Life -- which will showcase African American art, history, and culture.
Thursdays-Saturdays, 12-5 p.m. Starts: May 11. Continues through June 16
