Shelter From the Ash (Drag City)

Six Organs of Admittance psych-folk Comets on Fire

Ben Chasny has spent the past decade injecting a rosy, psych-folk vibe into several acoustic solo records, as well as into electric collaborations with veterans of the territory like Current 93 and Comets on Fire. On the latest album by his most steady project, Six Organs of Admittance, Chasny gets political, making protest music just like 1960s folk heroes used to make. Yet Shelter From the Ash keeps the focus on Chasny's solid guitar work — which ranges from nimble finger plucks to broad-stroke jams. The title track particularly roars, recalling "All Along the Watchtower," while the Magik Markers' Elisa Ambrogio adds haunting vocals throughout. The cinders of the CD title represent the remnants of war-torn countries across the globe. Chasny's modern commentary cuts to the core, even if it's occasionally housed in faux-antique packages.
