Smiley Baldazar

Relax . . . It's Out of Control (Your Face)

In the funked-up world of Smiley Baldazar, the father, son, and holy ghost are Frank Zappa, Duane Allman, and Les Claypool. With those spirits guiding its way, this Lakewood ensemble rips through a gauntlet of horny sailors, confused killers, embryonic chickens, and horse trainers. In "How Bout That Moon," frontman Mike Jacobs shares his nightmare vision in a hoarse croon: "When the hellhounds bark/It sounds just like a song from Grease 2/And I have to sing along." Mile-a-minute raps about a parade of horribles belie the band's musical sophistication. The peppy "Local on the 8s" mutates from light swing into choppy Zappa-esque jazz, as a squonking saxophone and angular keyboard breakdowns give way to a chainsaw guitar solo. The lyrics reek of slapstick, but the jams are serious.
