Sound Advice

Patrick Carney lays it out for you.

Patrick Carney is the impeccably dressed, slightly unhinged drummer for the Akron duo the Black Keys.

What do you credit for the disproportionate wealth of good Akron bands?

I guess it's the hatred, jealousy, and contempt all bands feel for each other here. It's a real "close" scene. Also, the rock and roll class they offer at Akron U.

What's the biggest pain in running a label?

Other than having to "make" the bands and write all their dance moves and songs? I guess it would be spending money.

What advice would you give to a band trying to make the move from local fixture to a major indie?

Suck a lot of dick. I wouldn't, but I guess it might work.

What have you been listening to lately?

Just tapes of myself talking to me about cool stuff.

What are the best and most surprising local albums you heard this year?

There are a lot of good records coming out of Ohio right now, but I guess the best would be something that we put out on Audio Eagle. The Beaten Awake record is a proverbial hot-dog ticket. The Party Dream's new record is gonna get us the down payment on our company cigarette boat, and the Houseguest record is a real winner.

Who are your favorite guitarists of the last 20 years?

I guess, Dan Auerbach and Dan Marino (I don't know if he plays guitar, but I bet it would be awesome).

What would be your biggest guilty pleasure?

Murder. Or the Eagles.

What was the best concert you saw locally in the past year?

The only concerts I've been to this year were ones that I was involved with, but Houseguest was real good at the Audio Eagle showcase at the Lime Spider.
