Astral Project finds inspiration in India.

Tony Dagradi, the saxophonist for jazz group Astral Project, says his iPod has "a whole lot of Indian classical music" on it these days. No surprise, since the New Orleans band is known for taking a free-range approach. "Your whole livelihood depends on being proactive," Dagradi says.

Since 1978, the quartet has explored everything from offbeat funk and street rhythms to big-band standards and Eastern melodies. "It's important to work on certain facets out of the norm," says Dagradi. "It sharpens your focus."
