Juan Antonio Bayona's suspenseful The Orphanage is the kind of flick where mere whispers can make a viewer break out in goose bumps. Nominated for 14 Goya Awards — Spain's counterpart to the Oscars — the ghost yarn leaves the scariest parts to the imagination. The story revolves around Laura, who returns to the orphanage where she grew up. Her adopted son then shocks her by talking about his invisible buddies, who haunt the house. The kid then mysteriously disappears, and Laura thinks the boy's phantom pals may be more real than she first thought. Through a series of cat-and-mouse mindfucks, the resident spirits show the chilling connection between Laura's past and present. The creepiness starts at 7:30 p.m. today and 9:25 p.m. tomorrow at the Cleveland Cinematheque, 11141 East Boulevard. Tickets are $6 to $8. Call 216-421-7450 or visit
Fri., March 14, 7:30 p.m.; Sat., March 15, 9:25 p.m., 2008
