Spring in Your Step

Celebrate warm weather by running around outside.

Shake off the winter weight at today’s Jog Into Spring event in Independence. The fifth-annual outing includes a 5K run and a 1K walk. That’s quite a leap from the first year, when folks welcomed the season with a brief sprint. “I don’t think there is anything better than good physical fitness,” says Myles Roche, who organized the run in tribute to his late schoolteacher wife, who used to celebrate the end of winter by taking her students on an outdoor walk. “She was very committed to adding a personal touch to getting kids to learn.”

There’s incentive to get out and run today: Top finishers in each age and weight group snag gift certificates and plaques. “This kicks off the racing season for many athletes,” says Roche, who adds that people come from as far away as New York and Michigan to participate. “The importance of fitness as a lifestyle was a concept [my wife] preached. There is so much obesity in our society. It is something that needs to be fought on a daily basis.”
