Star-Spangled Spectacular

When: Mon., July 2, 5 p.m. 2012
Phone: 216-231-1111
Price: free
Just how popular have Cleveland food trucks become? Well, they’ll be showing up for Cleveland’s largest celebration of the birth of the nation, which explodes tonight on Public Square. Joining the mobile eateries will be the venerable Cleveland Orchestra, performing under the direction of Jahja Ling. It’s all part of the annual Star-Spangled Spectacular, which isn’t only a celebration of country but also of community. “It’s our way to thank the community for supporting the orchestra,” says communications director Ana Papakhian. Show up at 5 p.m. for performances by the Chardon Polka Band, the North Coast Men’s Chorus, and the Roberto Ocasio Foundation Latin Jazz Project. Then at 9 p.m., the Cleveland Orchestra is joined by soprano Janice Chandler-Eteme in a performance of quintessential American favorites, including works by Gershwin, Gould, and Sousa. The whole night ends with a bang: Tchaikovsky’s “1812 Overture,” and a giant fireworks display that will light up the Cleveland sky. Just like us, it’s free.
