Steely Dan/The Deep Blue Organ Trio

“We still surprise each other all the time,” says Steely Dan’s Donald Fagen during a recent conference call with reporters. “It’s a tribute to our short term memory loss. When you get older, there aren’t many people who understand your references any more. We’re the only audience we have. No one remembers the TV themes we remember. If you hum the theme song for Hawaiian Eye, no one will know what you’re doing.” Fagen and his musical partner Walter Becker have clearly retained their sense of humor. The guys have even provided a tongue-in-cheek title for their current tour, which they’ve named Mood Swings: 8 Miles To Pancake Day. On their classic albums from the ’70s, they mixed jazz, rock and R&B with sardonic, wry lyrics and created a unique sonic sound that hip-hop acts have often sampled. Eight supporting musicians and three backing vocalists will back them for this show. (Jeff Niesel)
