Why didn't someone think of this sooner? At Borders' YogAdventure Kids Storytime, Sheila Buchanan reads a book about people twisting and turning their limbs into all sorts of funky positions. Then she shows little ones how to bend their own arms and legs into similar arrangements. "Yoga gets kids off the couch," Buchanan says. "It teaches them that they are perfect exactly the way they are." Saturday's story is Playful Family Yoga: For Kids, Grandparents, and Parents. "The book is my absolute favorite," Buchanan gushes. "It shows children doing poses with parents, and brothers and sisters doing [yoga] together. It promotes family unity." It also improves motor skills and flexibility, and keeps kids from throwing hissy fits when things don't go their way. "We teach them how to calm themselves down and control their anger," Buchanan says. "[This is] about spending some more time with your children and doing something healthy." Imagine Charlie Brown, only taller and without that goofy yellow zigzag shirt, and you've got Caillou, the guest of honor at Saturday's Caillou's Big Party. It's a live stage production featuring the curious 4-year-old star of the hit PBS TV show. And you can bet lessons will be learned via the many, many songs packed into the musical. The story has to do with Caillou and his pals' (including fuzzy feline friend Gilbert) quest for what goes into making the best party ever. Expect to participate in that search. "People are going to be singing, clapping, standing up, and helping Caillou on what to do next," explains Colleen Porter, Playhouse Square's director of education. "Caillou depends on the audience to get him through the party." It gets started at 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. at the Allen Theatre, 1407 Euclid Avenue. Poor Prince Xavier. His subjects in Mumblelot think he's a brainless nitwit. So, in Jabberwocky, he ventures into the forest to prove them wrong. The puppet-propelled musical is based on Lewis Carroll's poem about a quest to conquer the mysterious titular creature. Xavier sets out to slay the beast, but all he finds is a timid, sleepy monster. Together, they hatch a plan to teach the kingdom a lesson. Jabberwocky opens Saturday at Cleveland Play House (8500 Euclid Avenue) and plays through February 29.
