Sukiyaki Western Django (Japan, 2007)

An uber-stylized, flamboyantly overripe spaghetti Western homage/pastiche by Japanese cult director Takashi Miike (Audition, Ichi the Killer) in which an unnamed gunman (Hideaki Ito) moseys into a lonely mountain town and gets involved in an internecine feud between two rival clans (the Genji Whites and the Heiki Reds) over a fortune in hidden gold. The fact that the warring factions are color-coded should give you some idea of Miike's typically wigged-out approach to genre conventions. Miike's first English-language film, the movie features a mostly Japanese cast speaking a weirdly phonetic version of Old West lingo. In an amusingly nonsensical supporting role, geek squad poster boy Quentin Tarantino plays a gunslinger named Ringo. For those with a taste for the outré, this is a gruesomely violent, unabashedly disreputable guilty pleasure that's more entertaining than it has a right to be. Cleveland Institute of Art Cinematheque. At 7:30 p.m. Friday, Nov. 14 and at 8:45 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 16. HHH
