Sunflower Bean/The Lemon Twigs/Punch Drunk Tagalogs

When: Thu., Oct. 20, 8 p.m. 2016
Price: $10 ADV, $12 DOS
The opening track on Sunflower Bean’s full-length debut, Human Ceremony, reveals shades of Pink Floyd in the guitar work alongside singer Julia Cumming’s ethereal vocals. It’s a nice, wide-open track on an album that invites close listening. (Smashing Pumpkins influence abounds, as well.) But from there, the bands takes the next 10 cuts to explore all manner of styles: a dash of metal here, a pinch of psychedelia over there. Somehow, it works, and the album ends up feeling more cohesive than it probably should. They’re an exciting band, this trio from Brooklyn, and, through their penchant for variety they’re setting themselves apart from the rest of the pack pretty easily. (Eric Sandy)
