Taking Back Sunday bassist Shaun Cooper clearly remembers his first show with the band. He joined the group the day after Christmas in 2000 and played his first gig on New Year’s Eve. “We just played a party at a friend’s house,” he says via phone from his Long Island home. “Back then, we were just young, dumb kids who didn’t know what we were doing. Guitarist Eddie [Reyes] was a bit older and had been around the Long Island hardcore scene forever. We were just following his lead. I was this strange little kid who came in and was all nerdy and wore professional-wrestling T-shirts.” After what Cooper describes as “the worst tour ever,” the band started to catch on in its Long Island hometown and played a local show with Dashboard Confessional and the Starting Line. That performance caught the attention of a lawyer who then helped them sign to Victory Records, which issued the band’s debut, Tell All Your Friends, in 2002. It’s that disc that the band will revisit for this show. “That album was a real catalyst, and people still want to hear it,” he says of Tell All Your Friends, an album of melodic hardcore that features call-and-response vocals. “I think it was the right place at the right time. [Emocore heroes] Thursday had made some huge headway on Victory, and Victory knew how to market us. We were one of the first Victory bands to have a commercial on MTV2. People could identity with the honesty and the heartache on the album. We kind of lucked out.” (Jeff Niesel)
