Texas Plant Mixes Folk and Punk on its Self-Titled Debut

Texas Plant

Texas Plant

Led by singer Matthew Leeb, who prides himself on playing "inanimate objects" in addition to more conventional instruments like the harmonica, this local folk-punk group has only been together for a short time, but you wouldn't know it from this terrific album. The disc opens with rowdy, twangy beer drinking anthems such as "Little Jimmy" and "Big Ole Gin," songs that evoke the late, great Bad Livers with their irreverent lyrics and warbling vocals. "Old News" comes off a bit like a Tom Waits tune, and you'll find yourself singing along to the bluegrass-y "2's, 3's and 12's," an infectious tune about staying up all night on a bender. The chants of "hey" in "Ain't for Me Babe" make the group sound like bluegrass's answer to the gypsy punk band Gogol Bordello. Ultimately, these tunes will make good fodder for the band's terrific live show.

Texas Plant performs with Buzzard Wagon and Goddamn Gallows at the Beachland Ballroom at 8 p.m., Thursday, July 3.
