The Art of Rock

A new exhibit paints a vivid portrait of female rockers.

Cleveland Institute of Art grad Dana Schutz is known for piling on the bright colors in landscapes. But in her latest exhibit, Dana Schutz: Paintings 2002-2006, on display at MOCA, she applies the reds, greens, and yellows to portraits of fem-rockers like PJ Harvey and the Breeders.

Schutz renders her work in a hazy, flashy palette that exaggerates features. Realism isn't at the top of her list: The Breeders' Deal sisters basically look like potatoes with corn-kernel eyes, and a grotesquely skinny Harvey wields a microphone that is almost as long as her arm.

It's a dazzling collection of work (featuring three pieces created specifically for this exhibit) that tears down the boundaries of still-lifes and landscapes, finding a scenic spot in between.
Tuesdays-Sundays, 11 a.m.-6 p.m. Starts: Sept. 29. Continues through Dec. 30
