The Books

With Field Guide to Plants & Animals, Brian Straw, and Todd Reynolds. Saturday, April 29, at the Grog Shop.

Even in the extended, open-armed community that is indie rock, the Books don't fit (and that alone qualifies the group as a critical darling). The drummerless duo of Nick Zammuto and Paul de Jong (a guitarist from Boston and cellist from Rotterdam) recorded three full-lengths of "found sounds" before they even thought to perform live.

"We were never planning on being a touring band at all. But about a year and a half ago, when we were working on Lost and Safe, we decided that it'd probably be good to show our faces. It took a long time to figure out how to put our music in a performable way that would be actually interesting to watch," says de Jong. "The upside of it actually is that we can synchronize video real easy with our music. We really got heavily into video over the past year, kind of in the same way we're approaching sounds, so we find a lot of video images at thrift stores and Salvation Armies . . .We're interested in the fringes of society's garbage heap."
