The Boredoms

Wednesday, June 28, at the Grog Shop.

If Japan's Boredoms were photographers, Polaroids would be the foremost medium of this psychedelic/Krautrock-informed noise-core collective. Those lo-fi squares allow for highly tactile manipulation, and the smudging of a Polaroid emulsion is akin to the way the Boredoms can "jam" chimerically. Some Boredoms' meanderings suggest what happens when you've left a camera's aperture open way too long, so that super-saturated color takes the place of actual detail. Other spasms are so dotted with splashy percussion and verbalized nonsense that it's like documenting a landscape with your eyelids fluttering at a typewriter's pace, peck after peck driven home like a series of snapshots from a vacation in a free/freak jazz moon bounce. Sometimes playing synth glissando, other times just plain guitar static, the Boredoms come on like a gangbang documented in gritty detail under a swarm of Polaroid flash burns.
