Filmmaker Terrance Zdunich recently made his first stop at a Waffle House. “My travel companions are all laughing at me,” he says. “Whatever expectations I had of buttery greatness, it definitely delivered.” So what is the writer and composer of The Devil’s Carnival — a comedic and subversive musical that aims for audience participation — doing at a roadside waffle heaven? It’s all part of his strategy. After his earlier flick, 2008’s Repo!, flopped as a theatrical release, Zdunich and his team rethought their distributing system. “We sort of got hit with the hard reality, which was — we made a weird movie! It wasn’t until we screened Repo! at a film festival that [there] was a more alternative crowd and all these people showed up. Not only were they loving the film, there was a real sense of community.” Once they found their audience for Repo! on tour, it only made sense to do it again for The Devil’s Carnival. “The storylines are modern retellings of Aesop’s Fables,” says Zdunich. “I sort of like that idea of having moral lessons being taught in hell, of all places, and being taught through music.” The tour, which comes to Cleveland’s Capitol Theatre today, also includes a sideshow, a burlesque act, a costume contest, and a meet-and-greet with Zdunich and director Darren Lynn Bousman. Tickets are $21 to $32 online.
