It's always cause for mass celebration whenever a new store opens that caters exclusively to the geek crowd. It's positively King-Kong-bananas time when two new shops open their doors within weeks of each other.
Comics Are Go! in Sheffield Village celebrated its opening in May, appropriately on Free Comic Book Day. They were one of a dozen or so local comic book shops handing out free comics on that most sacred of days.
But the best part of making the trip out west was a chance to see the new shop set up by Scott Rudge, a fixture on the local comics scene and the former owner of the sorely missed Astound Comics in Westlake (and, depending on what angle you catch him at, a dude who kinda looks like The Simpsons' Comic Book Guy).
Astound closed its doors a little before 2011's Free Comic Book Day, so Rudge handed out comics at the Westlake Porter Public Library last year. He actually moved his already-cramped store from the front of a Detroit Road shopping plaza to a room the size of a closet in the back of the building, with plans to take most of his business online.
But one year and a popular comics podcast later, he's opened Comics Are Go! The new spot has a lot in common with his old place: It's located in a shopping plaza on Detroit Road, it's not super-huge, and you can't turn around without bumping into something with Spider-Man on it. And we totally love it.
We also totally love that Comics Are Go! stocks monster magazines, action figures, and a bunch of other geeky things that 73 percent of our paychecks go toward.
The store is at 5188 Detroit Rd, in Sheffield Village. You can find more info at facebook.com/pages/Comics-Are-Go/110354429027687.
Sleepy Robot 13 in Lakewood also recently gave us a big ol' nerd hug. The store sells a whole bunch of designer toys — from custom-made items by owner Lisastarchild Pinkston to tiny collectibles featuring the cuddly Japanese monster Domo to vinyl tributes to pop-culture icons like Indiana Jones.
True to its name, Sleepy Robot 13 features a bunch of robot-themed toys that look way too cute to be bothered with taking over mankind or anything like that.
Best of all, on the first Saturday of every month, Sleepy Robot 13 holds a Saturday Morning Cartoons party with old-school cartoons and cereal.
And if you come dressed in your pajamas (and seriously, why wouldn't you?), you can get 10 percent off your order. They're located at 13345 Madison Ave. You can find more info at facebook.com/sleepyrobot13.
