The Drum's the Thing

When: Sat., April 26 2014
Everybody loves a good beat. Case Western Reserve University’s Department of Music pays tribute to rock and jazz drummers today during the Center for Popular Music Studies’ conference, Drumming, which takes place from 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., in Harkness Chapel. Free and open to the public, the concert features a range of speakers and musicians and concludes with a performance featuring freelance drummer Mark Ferber, CWRU jazz pianist and music department chair David Ake, and local bassist Marty Block. “Drumming is the great understudied and underappreciated side of popular music,” says Robert Walser, professor and director of the Center for Popular Music Studies, in a press release about the event. “Drums are always there, but few people have actually tried to explain why or how they work.” Walser is directing the conference.
