The Legendary Count Basie Orchestra

When: Sat., March 8, 7 & 9 p.m. 2014
Price: $40
“The swinging-est band in all the land!” is what radio-listeners in the 1930s heard when the Count Basie Orchestra played. And it’s what you’ll hear why tonight at Night Town. Founded in Kansas City, Missouri in 1935 by William “Count” Basie, the group still plays even though Basie passed away years ago. You’ve seen Basie and his band playing the desert in Mel Brooks’ Blazing Saddles, and over the years the CBO has won 17 Grammy awards. Their early hit “One O’Clock Jump” builds up from smooth and subtle solos to that classic wall of wail. From their Second Testament era, “April in Paris” nails that singular blending melodic line for which they’re known. The band is led by Dennis Mackrel, and includes players hired by Basie himself.
