The Man From Brazil

Jazzman Santos Neto loves the sounds of Rio.

Jovino Santos Neto has devoted much his life to exploring the complexities of Brazilian sounds. The Rio de Janeiro flutist and keyboardist plays songs that skirt the line between traditional folk and modern jazz. "I always look for a personal voice that connects to a tradition that I am proud to be part of," he says. Fresh from recording his latest album, Roda Carioca, Neto will perform a pair of shows at Nighttown this weekend with his All-Star International Trio, which includes percussionist Jamey Haddad and bassist Roberto Ochippinti.

Santos Neto was on his way to spending his life deep in the Amazon jungle as a biologist, but he shifted gears in 1977, when he started playing music full-time. Since then, he's jammed with Chick Corea, recorded with Sergio Mendes, and scored a Latin Grammy nomination. "Most of my days are spent making music," he says. "I am connected to this chain of composition, and I have a responsibility to keep the quality of that alive."
