The Pink Floyd Experience

When: Thu., Feb. 21, 8 p.m. 2013
Price: $10-$36
On the heels of Pink Floyd’s 1994 tour in support of The Division Bell, Tom Quinn was so inspired by the show, he started the Pink Floyd Experience to pay tribute to the British prog rock legends. The beginnings were rather humble. “I think 80 people paid $2 to get into our first show,” he says. “We weren’t too bad.” Now, nearly 20 years later, the guy is still at it, touring the country with an ensemble that can crank out tunes from the band’s entire career. A good handful of Floyd tribute acts can make the same claim, so what sets Quinn and his pals apart? “One reviewer said it best,” he says. “He said that rather than emphasizing Roger [Waters’s] morose self-importance and the arrogant detachment, we were respectful but light and engaging and brought the crowd into the show. I thought that was high praise.” For the current jaunt, the band is touring with a deafening surround-sound stereo system and a floating pig, both of which are designed to recreate Floyd’s stadium shows. In addition to playing rare b-sides and soundtrack material, the band will include material from early albums such as Piper at the Gates of Dawn. “We’re hitting everything,” Quinn says. “And we’ll play plenty of the hits to keep people from dozing off.” (Jeff Niesel)
