The Restoration of Liberation Theology: From Gutiérrez and Ratzinger to Pope Francis and Obama

When: Wed., Oct. 15, 12-1:30 p.m. 2014
Price: $15-25
James Keane will explore the theological, anthropological, and political questions that surface in Matthew 25:31-46 and how they have been addressed in the theology of Vatican II and in the liberation theology of Gustavo Gutiérrez. He will argue that in the 1980s, Pope John Paul II and Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger sought to deliberately “dial-back” perceived “excesses” of Vatican II, mainly liberation theology with its emphasis on solidarity with the poor and marginalized. However, recent actions by the new pontiff, Pope Francis, suggest a restoration of liberation solidarity and an appreciation for the Gutierrez's insights.
