The Sci-fi Guy

When: Thu., July 17 2014
If you missed the charming, wonderful documentary Jodorowsky’s Dune, about out-there filmmaker Alejandro Jodorowsky at Cleveland Cinemas a couple months back, fear not. You’ll have the opportunity to see it tonight at 6 and tomorrow at 5:15 p.m. at the Cleveland Institute of Art Cinematheque. The film chronicles the experimental Chilean director’s noble efforts to produce Dune, what surely would have been one of the greatest cinematic sci-fi epics of all time, had studios not cowered in fear at its scope. Also, tomorrow at 7 p.m. and Saturday at 8:30 p.m., see The Dance of Reality, Jodorowsky’s first feature in 23 years. It blends autobiography and myth and is, according to the New York Times, very cl ose to a masterpiece. Jodorowsky made his name crafting surrealist cinema in the hippie-dippie ’70s with shit like El Topo and The Holy Mountain. So if you want a viewing experience that approximates the effects of LSD, (the director’s stated goal), then Jodorowsky’s your guy. Tickets are $9. (Allard)
