The Shins

When: Thu., Oct. 25, 8 p.m. 2012
Price: $35-$40
After 2007’s Wincing the Night Away, the Shins took a hiatus of sort. During that time, Shins frontman James Mercer teamed up with uber-producer Dangermouse to form Broken Bells and deliver a terrific self-titled effort that retained some of the Shins qualities, namely hushed vocals and intricate pop melodies. For many an indie rock act, the long break between studio releases would have signaled their demise. But Mercer reorganized the Shins and recruited new band mates for this year’s Port of Morrow, easily one of the year’s best albums. Later this month, the band plans to release a limited edition 7-inch vinyl single featuring alternate versions of Port of Morrow tracks “No Way Down” and “Fall of 82.” The live show tends to miss some of the music's intricacies but Mercer has an emotive voice that makes up for some of those losses. Tonight’s show is one of the few remaining U.S. dates because the band heads to Mexico for a short tour and then only plays a handful of stateside shows before the year ends. (Jeff Niesel)
