In the Syrian city of Homs, the journey of two friends — from peaceful activists to rebel insurgents — illuminates the devastation of war and the destruction of a nation. That sad story is at the heart of Return to Homs, a documentary which snagged this year’s Grand Jury Prize at Sundance, along with special jury recognition at the San Francisco International Film Fest, an audience award in Madrid, and the Nestor Almendros Award for courage in filmmaking from Human Rights Watch — among many others. Without the usual documentary devices to give us context, director Talal Derki has created a world both visceral and devasting. The film screens at 7 tonight at the Capitol Theatre. Tickets are $9.
