The Wallflowers

With Anna Nalick. Monday, July 11, at House of Blues.

Besides playing sessions with artists as diverse as Johnny Cash, Everclear, Foo Fighters, Melissa Etheridge, and El Vez (aka "the Mexican Elvis"), keyboardist Rami Jaffee is also the only original member of the Wallflowers who's not the son of a world-famous music icon. And though the Los Angeles native has played long-term Boy Wonder to frontman Jakob Dylan's Caped Crusader, Jaffee can still muster perspective when it comes to his partner's songwriting.

"When you're in a band for 15 years," he says, "even if you do love the songwriting, you're going to be objective, because you see every little sneaky trick done. But I'm still blown away.

"He's a hard worker," Jaffee adds of Dylan the Younger. "He's a really thoughtful songwriter. He doesn't just 'shit them out,' as they say."

So, does the well-traveled keyboardist have a favorite cut on the Wallflowers' fifth and latest release, Rebel, Sweetheart?

"I really like 'I Am a Building,'" he says. "It has a really cool, slightly odd beat to it, and the lyrics are really cool. I thought that was a really fun recording."

Which doesn't necessarily mean that it's Jaffee's top choice to play live.

"Two whole verses go by, and I don't even play," he says. "So it's not my favorite playing, for sure. Actually it's quite boring. It's like, there goes a verse, have a sip of my beer, light a cigarette, and wait for the chorus. But it's one of my favorites to hear."
