The Weepies

Tuesday, May 2, at the Beachland Tavern.

The Weepies is a rather deceptive name for Steve Tannen and Deb Talan's band. Listening to their music will provoke more smiles than tears. The two don't wear their hearts -- all big and sloppy -- on their sleeves, but express their emotions in more subdued ways. Residents of that partly cloudy/partly sunny folk-pop world populated by the likes of Hem and Over the Rhine, Tannen and Talan met about five years ago in Boston, thanks to admiration for each other's solo albums. It sparked a collaboration between them, onstage and off.

Although they are married, their songs aren't just mushy love platitudes, but rather explorations of life's often messy complexities. The Weepies' recently released sophomore effort, Say I Am You, is a highly listenable affair. Tunes like "Take It From Me," "Gotta Have You," and "Painting by Chagall" blend chimey melodies, warm harmonies, and thoughtful lyrics. Luminous moments like these serve to distinguish the Weepies from the NPR/Starbucks soundtrack crowd.
