They've Got Rhythm

Cain Park eases on down the road in urban take on The Wizard of Oz.

When you catch tonight's opening of The Wiz in Cleveland Heights, don't be caught off guard if you suddenly find yourself in the thick of the action as Dorothy, Toto, and gang skip down the yellow-brick road to see the Wizard of Oz. "I love to have the show itself be very interactive with the audiences," says Pierre-Jacques Brault, the show's director. "With the surroundings of Cain Park, we'll have characters coming through the aisles who take advantage of the outdoor theater." The production is Brault's sophomore effort at staging the African American take on L. Frank Baum's legendary book. At age 29, he still marvels at the musical's portrayal of good versus evil. Its score of rock, R&B, and gospel tunes also adds to its urban flavor. "When I leave rehearsal, I leave exhilarated. That's something you don't always get with live theater," says Brault. "It celebrates everything about a person and their individuality." The curtain rises at 8 p.m. Thursdays through Sundays, through Sunday, July 6, at Cain Park, 14591 Superior Road in Cleveland Heights. Tickets are $10. Call 216-371-3000 or visit www.cainpark.com.
Thursdays-Sundays, 8 p.m. Starts: June 19. Continues through July 6, 2008
