Tiger Beatdown

The best golfers in the world come to Akron, but Woods will likely dominate. Again.

Don’t expect an underdog to rise from the bottom tier and claim this weekend’s Bridgestone Invitational. This is Tiger’s game. More than 70 golfers from the PGA American, European, and Asian tours will be on board, but Tiger Woods always saves a special can of whoop-ass for this annual tourney: He’s won the event five times in its eight-year history. He’s gunning for his third consecutive victory this weekend.

The tournament features heavy hitters like Vijay Singh and Phil Mickelson. But all eyes will be on Tiger, says PGA Tour spokeswoman Laura Neal. “Even after 11 years, he still is the draw,” she says. “Obviously, there are other great golfers, but the Tiger Woods name and the aura around him is like something out of a fairy tale. He’s the kind of athlete who comes along once in a generation.”
