Time to Get Drawn & Quartered

When: Sat., May 19 2012
Phone: 216-621-6644
Price: donations accepted
It’s Wide World of Wrestling meets art-school cabaret, as the Drawn & Quartered contest makes its fourth annual appearance. Set this year in the Loren Naji Studio and Gallery, Drawn & Quartered pits four local figure-drawing groups (the Murray Hill Arts Group, Dr. Sketchy Cleveland, Pretentious Tremont Artists of the Literary Cafe, and the Northern Ohio Illustrators Society) against each other to vie for prizes, glory, and the votes of judges — and you get to watch it all unfold. “It’s drawing as spectator sport,” says founder Deb Steytler “complete with announcers, teams, enthusiasm, and crowds — which never happens in the art environment.” Among the bouts: caricatures, best likenesses, and left-handed sketching (or right-handed, if you’re a leftie). Food and drink will be available, as will drawing materials for observers who are itching to take part. Some rounds will even feature live models, including two costumed performers from Morrison Dance. Plus artwork will be available for purchase. “Buy it off the wall or off the easel,” urges Steytler. There’s no ticket fee, but free-will donations will be accepted to help defray expenses. The night kicks off at 6 with a reception, and the contest starts at 7. Be sure to stick around for the after-party, too, with hors d’oeuvres, drinks, and live music. Learn more at Drawn and Quartered 2012 on Facebook.
