Toward a Cultural History of the Backbeat

When: Mon., Dec. 5 2016
In a famous sermon given to his Nashville congregation in 1956—captured on film now on display at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame—Reverend Jimmy Snow preaches passionately about the evils of rock music and specifically identifies the backbeat as the culprit. Steven Baur, an Associate Professor of Musicology at the Fountain School of Performing Arts at Dalhousie University in Halifax, Nova Scotia, will trace the origins of the backbeat to several 19th- and early-20th-century African-American musical traditions in his lecture "Toward a Cultural History of the Backbeat." He speaks tonight at 7 at Rock & Roll Hall of Fame’s Library and Archives. Admission is free with a RSVP through the Rock Hall website. (Niesel)
