Tri-C JazzFest's DownBeat Invitational

If you’ve ever wondered how a great jazz musician is made, here’s a hint: Some of Cleveland’s best have been part of the Tri-C JazzFest High School All-Stars. Among the well-known alumni who once played in the band, you’ll find familiar names like Sean Jones, formerly lead trumpeter for the Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra and current artistic director for the Cleveland and Pittsburgh jazz orchestras. Then there’s Dominick Farinacci, an award-winning trumpeter and artistic director of Tri-C’s Young Visiting Artists program. And don’t forget drummer Jerome Jennings, whom you may have seen on late-night shows with Conan O’Brien or Craig Ferguson. Turns out, there are plenty more where they came from, too: more than enough to fill the 18-member High School All-Star Alumni Band that will be making its debut tonight at the JazzFest’s annual DownBeat Invitational. Band director — and head of TriC’s jazz department — Steve Enos trained these talents during their high-school days, and will lead them again in tonight’s performance. “I’m proud of these kids,” he says. “And I know they’re going to swing like crazy!” The current crop of Tri-C Jazz Fest High School All-Stars opens tonight’s show. It happens at 7 p.m. inside the Main Stage Theatre on Tri-C’s Metro Campus. Tickets are $10 by phone or online, where you’ll also find the complete 2012 JazzFest schedule.
