Twist, Don't Shout 

At today's Healing Effects of Yoga program at Lakewood Public Library, Cathleen Donovan will show folks how they can sit in front of a computer all day and still reach a state of perfect spiritual insight and tranquility. It's called chair yoga, and we're already rejoicing! "Postures are modified to the chair and move each joint in the body through its full range of motion," the Yoga West Studio teacher explains, somewhat cryptically. "Chair yoga provides postures to release the neck, shoulders, back, arms, wrists, and fingers."

Participants will also learn about breathing exercises and guided-imagery relaxation techniques, which help relieve stress. It's all about straight posture and deep breathing, says Donovan. "Slouching pushes the chest down, compressing the lungs," she says. "If the lungs can't open fully with each inhalation, less oxygen enters the body. And less oxygen means less energy."

And Donovan stresses energy — particularly positive energy. "Yoga's primary emphasis is on general well-being," she says. "My mother practiced yoga when I was 10 or so. I remember [her] twisted in all sorts of ways, and I would try to do what she was doing."
