Unknown Hinson

Friday, May 19, at the Beachland Tavern.

Col. Sanders dressed as Dracula after a weeklong crack bender -- this is a fairly close physical description of cult-country minstrel Unknown Hinson. Allegedly a 400-year-old vampire, Hinson moonlights as a hillbilly squid from northern Georgia. (He lends his voice to Cartoon Network's adult swim franchise, Squidbillies. ) And he's always an adventurous, groundbreaking country artist and a renowned guitar picker.

While song titles such as "Pregnant Again" and "I Ain't Afraid of Your Husband" suggest parody, they're examples of classic country storytelling reminiscent of David Allan Coe's best work. Other favorites, such as "Silver Platter," pack enough rockabilly-based thrills to make your sideburns grow three inches. After initially scoring fans with The Unknown Hinson Show, his public-access TV show in Charlotte, he's built a loyal base all over the world, touring with Rev. Horton Heat and Hank III, the latter sporting a tattoo of Hinson's weathered kisser on his biceps.
