Unsane

With Keelhaul and Fistula. Sunday, January 5, at the Grog Shop.

Unsane is back. Not for long, though, so you'd better catch the band while you can, especially if you missed 'em the first time around. When Unsane first blew out of New York's subway tunnels and sewers at the tail end of the 1980s, the group was more of a physical force than a band. The late Charlie Ondras's drumming whipped guitarist/vocalist Chris Spencer and bassist Pete Shore along, as if they were racing each other to the finish of each song. But this was not just hardcore bluster. Unsane was all about pain: expressing it and spreading it around. The guitar zipped through eardrums like a jigsaw, while the rhythm section pummeled the body. This situation only improved when former Swans skinsman Vinny Signorelli replaced Ondras. Every Unsane album is a keeper, and each has standout tracks, but many would say the group went out on top with its swan song, Occupational Hazard, on Pennsylvania death-metal label Relapse. Seeing Unsane live on the tour following that disc was an act of masochism -- in the best possible way. Unsane came to hurt you, and you came to take it and love it. So now you're getting one more chance.
