Urban Sprawl

Popular hip-hop DJ tries his hand at rock.

Over the past two years, DJ Terry Urban has built a devoted fan base in local nightclubs with his hip-hop sets. But expect the 29-year-old Maple Heights resident to spin more rock and pop tracks when he works the tables at the Corner Alley tonight. “Hip-hop used to be about having fun,” he says. “Now it’s flooded with bullshit about guns, money, and bitches.”

Urban also hosts a pair of prerecorded radio shows every week: He can be heard at 8 p.m. on Saturdays on WENZ-FM 107.9 and on Sirius Radio’s Hip-Hop Nation Channel 40 at midnight on Mondays.

He finds it “a little weird” that he’s spinning in an upscale bowling alley tonight, since it’s a far cry from his regular gigs at hip nightspots like Spy and Touch. “I normally DJ in clubs with predominantly black folks,” he says. “At the Corner Alley, I can go from James Blunt to Johnny Cash if I want.”
Sat., March 10, 9 p.m.-1 a.m.
